ONLY CHILD IS A LABEL based out of Oakland created by Haley Tucker. The brand focuses on simple, wearable fashion that can be word year-round. I was approached by Haley while I was still pregnant, and I'm so glad I was because I'm all about clothing that can be worn both during and after pregnancy. This silk Mara tunic pictured was worn after I had Harrison and the Madelyn coat in a lightweight wool was worn a few months before he was born. The styles are all super classic and I can see myself wearing them for a long time.

1. How did you get your start? Has this always been what you've wanted to do?
I've always had an obsession with clothing but never really thought about making it until a few years ago. I graduated from a pretty intense MFA program in 2014 where I focused on fine art photography and was feeling burnt out. I was desperately looking for a creative outlet where I could make something simply because I wanted to and without thinking about how it would fit into a thesis or an artist statement! I had some previous sewing experience and had already been looking for a way to invest in a more conscious closet. I started making the clothes that I had always dreamed of wearing: simple but unique basics that provided a solid foundation for multiple outfits. It all sort of took off quickly after that!
2. What are your sources of inspiration?
I feel like this changes all the time but right now I'm very drawn to collage. Serrah Russell, John Gossage, and Joe Rudko are some of my favorite artists at the moment. There is something about collage that helps me think about new shapes and color combinations.
I'm also constantly inspired by the creative women that I'm fortunate to be surrounded by here in the Bay Area. There are so many artists in Oakland and most are not afraid to express themselves through how they dress. I love seeing how real people wear and style different trends.
3. What is the mission statement for Only Child? Where does the name come from?
Only Child focuses on unique, high quality basics that seamlessly blend into any wardrobe while still being standouts on their own. Every piece is made with premium textiles rescued from surplus suppliers, cutting down on unnecessary waste and creating clothes that are environmentally sound.
I wanted a name for my brand that paid homage to all of the paths that I've taken to get here. Being an only child left me with a lot of time on my hands growing up that I filled with drawing, painting, and photographing. I feel like this line uses all of the creative skills I've learned throughout my life and I wanted a name that reflected that.
4. Describe a day off.
An ideal day off would include sleeping in, catching a movie, and going out for sushi! It's tempting when you're starting a new business to work any chance you get but I'm trying to remind myself to take a day off every once in a while
5. What's next for your line?
I'm very excited about releasing a new collection for Spring within the next few weeks, everything is focused on comfort and versatility. I've also got a great collaborative collection with online retailer West Heritage in the works!
